Thematic Issues of Science for Environment Policy

There is evidence that the results of research are not always fully exploited. It is thus important to improve the dissemination of research results so that they are both more usable for policy makers and help to communicate understanding of environmental issues to the general public. This is the reason why the Environment Directorate-General of the European Commission decided to establish "Science for Environment Policy", a weekly service of easy to read news alerts on new scientific findings in the field of top priority environmental issues, which is vital for knowledge based policy making. The target audience are policy makers as well as the wider public.

This service provides scientific information in the field of the main themes of the Environmental Action Programme and relevant to Directorate-General Environment's policy priorities in support of the knowledge based approach. An important number of scientific journals and publications is screened for environment-related research which is then "translated" into easily readable language. The sources cover scientific results of achieved or on-going EU funded projects and findings of other research initiatives implemented at international, national and regional levels,...

In Spring 2008, the Directorate-General Environment extended the weekly news alerts on new scientific environmental findings to include Thematic Issues with topics chosen according to the environmental policy agenda. These monthly Thematic Issues complement the popular news service through their added context. Furthermore, they reflect the current thinking on key environmental policy issues and thus act as an important line of communication between the international research and the public policy communities.

Five Thematic Issues had already been published in early 2008: Biofuels, Sustainable Production & Consumption, Carbon Capture & Storage, Air Pollution & Emission Trading, Deforestation.

Further issues planned for 2008: Invasive Alien Species, Water, Climate Change Adaptation, Biodiversity, GMOs.
